Be Seat Smart: Child Passenger Safety Week
This week the Vermont Department of Health is sponsoring Child Passenger Safety Week. This is a time to take a look at your child's car seat to evaluate if the seat is both properly installed and fitting your child correctly. But how do you know? There are events going on in the area where you can drop in to have a trained eye look over your car seat set up. OR, take a look at the info posted here, which includes installation tips, links to recall notices, and and answers to other car seat questions.
Tomorrow you can stop by Appleseed Pediatrics in Morrisville from 1:30-4:00 for a seat check, contact 802-888-7337 with questions. Another option is to head to the Williston State Police Barracks from 7:00-3:00 on 17th or 18th. They are doing walk ins on both days at that location.

Our summer segment is nearing it's end...hope you enjoy the last few...if you'd like to see this continued into the cooler months, let us know!
Activity: Name a color. Have me find something natural outdoors of that color. Then name another for me to find. (Would be great as we head into fall foliage time!)
Why?: My brain makes strong pathways when it focuses attention. When I pay attention to something, connections are formed between my brain cells and I am learning. Exploring nature with you makes learning easy and fun.
Welcome Megan!
We'd like to welcome Megan to Mountain Village School. She will be working across the upstairs classrooms. Megan has a background in Early Childhood Education; she has just returned from teaching young children in Cambodia and is a current M.Ed. student at Champlain College. Be sure to introduce yourself when you have a moment!
Classroom Happenings
Infant I: We've spent a lot of time outdoors. We have been really exploring the play ground in an active way and find empty containers to be especially fascinating. Many of the older infants have been pulling themselves up to stand, indoors, they have been using the furniture to do this. Some of the children have even been climbing on top of the furniture. Additionally, the room has become very social. There is a lot of noise and babbling going on as everyone investigates the faces of their classmates. The teachers are encouraging this social development by sitting in a circle to read. Meal times have also been important. As new eaters begin working on solid foods, they are watching their older peers carefully, seeing how they open their mouths in anticipation of a bite of food.
Infant II: It's the business of water in our class! There has been a lot of play with and in the water. The younger children have especially enjoyed this and have been watching and learning from their older peers. Outdoors, last week's parallel play has morphed into some active small group play. And inside, puzzles have been a way of displaying the rapid cognitive development of the children. An example of this from the week: The classroom contains 2 shape puzzles, each of which have a circle. One of the children examined the circle, and then made the connection that the shape was interchangeable on each puzzle. Lots of "a-ha" moments!
Toddler I: We are back in the swing of things as the whole group is together now for the first time! We welcomed a new student to the classroom this week, which is always exciting for the children. In the midst of our large class, we are splitting the children up into groups for a variety of activities, so be sure to check the white boards in the room for groups as well as other updates, including our weekly curriculum. On Friday, the children helped prepare fruit salad for FSF. They are doing more hands on prep than before, which is wonderful to see. We have a new rotation of books in the room, which really brings renewed enthusiasm and focus to the book area. Additionally, a new cowboy hat showed up on Friday and yee-haw was it a hit!
Toddler II: The word is adventure. The class has been out and about in the community this week, and have taken an interest once again in the swings at the SES playground. We have been working hard to use strong voices to communicate our needs with one another and the adults around us. We are also developing our problem solving skills when it comes to a number of tasks/situations. This requires adults to be patient and wait before providing help. In other news: Fish! We will be setting up our fish tank this week, and we have been having lots of conversations about these finned friends.
Pre-K: The children were happy to welcome Holli back to the classroom after a few days away. We had a mellow start to the week as we took moments to stay on-campus. Towards the week's end, we were out and about and exploring. On Friday, we had a very big trip to the bike path and all parts of town. We brought our lunches along with us and enjoyed a picnic. We made it back to MVS and crashed into solid naps before enjoying some afternoon treats. One of the children contributed some homemade honey cookies for a sweet year to come.
