Our teachers at MVS are incredibly important. We wouldn't be who we are without them. Thank you Carly, for all of your years of hard work and dedication to the children, the families, and our program. We truly appreicate you and can't wait to spend more time with you!

Classroom Updates

Infant I
We have had a lot of changes this week as we had two new children join us and had a few different teachers pop in and out. For the most part we proved to be pretty adaptable to different faces and routines, and we loved the new songs and games that came into the room. We are also starting to explore some different materials. This week we brought tin foil into the room and the children loved how it reflects light in different ways and makes such a satisfying sound when you crinkle it. Next week should be a bit quieter and more routine for us.

Infant II
This week we had a couple teachers from our older classrooms join us, which was new for some but by the end of the day they really warmed up to the new company. The children have been interested in snowballs and ice. They always point out the icicles hanging off of the building. One day this week we made a lot of snowballs outside. The children like to hold them, eat them, and then say how cold it is. The children also spent a lot of time playing with blocks. Peek-a-boo with scarves was also a game of interest this week. Puzzle play continues to be interesting and a serious solo activity. The children like to work on them independently and are working on asking for space while completing puzzles.

Toddlers
We had a very nice week in our classroom. Paige was with us for the week while Amanda was on vacation. It was great having Paige with us, the children were very excited! We continued playing with feathers in the sensory table and spent a lot of time exploring the new climber. It turns out it is a great place to bring a few materials and play independently. Sometimes the children will bring in pillows and rest too. When it was too cold to head outside we filled the sensory table with soapy water and had a great time!

Preschool I
We have welcomed a new classmate to Preschool 1! This week we continued exploring both ice and warm, soapy water in the sensory table. Warm, soapy water inspired the children to ask for scrub brushes to wash objects, the most popular being the plastic animals in the block area. Ice encouraged the children to place different parts of their bodies—fingers, hands, or elbows—on the ice and see how it felt. They also experimented balancing ice blocks, sliding them into each other to break them, and crushing the smaller pieces. Balancing and stacking was also explored in the block area. Overall, we’re working on communicating in strong, calm voices, both with peers and adults, and using listening ears and helping hands. Earlier in the week, some of the older children in the class went on a walk down to the Stowe Elementary playground and then joined PS2 and Pre-K on a sledding adventure at the big hill behind the hockey rink. Throughout the rest of the week, Shannon noticed that some of the children are swiftly identifying certain shapes and letters—along with the “listening station,” this is something she plans to pursue in the classroom next week.

Preschool II
Watercolors returned to our art exploration this week. We worked on making sure our brushes were clean between colors and then worked to mix the colors on our paper. It was very interesting to watch how some colors interacted with one another. We also have been working on creating patterns with our unifix cubes. We started with using guides to follow to create a pattern but now are working on creating our own individual patterns. We started discussing Valentines Day too. While some children thought it was a holiday for presents, we discussed the real meaning of the holiday. We talked about how it is a time to be kind and to let others know how much you love them. We also spent a good amount of time outdoors this week on the warmer days. We went for a HUGE sledding adventure with the other classes and had a great time going very fast together. We also took a walk to the Woof trail in the deep snow. We made a very large snowman with two legs, knees, a neck, shoulders and a nose. Our letter work continues. We have also made it through the entire alphabet! Some of the lowercase letters have been tricky to identify but we keep practicing. Our name writing has been a big focus for a few children lately too. Some of them have been labeling their own paintings.

PreK (This post was written by the children of the prek class.)
We go'd outside.
We ate snack.
We played on the playground.
We learned about letter H for Henry and Hannah and hearts.
We made super awesome train worlds with really big bridges.
We started a 300 piece puzzle.
It was a good week.

And they're off...

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. I want to thank all of those children for being a part of our school and our community. News and Reminders Mark your calendars: The PCC is planning a playdate with fire safety information for the morning of Saturday, September 15. More details coming soon. Kitchen Update This week the children tried carrot "noodles" which were happily slurped up in all class...

The Provider Side

Right now in Vermont there is a critical under-supply of early childhood education programs. In the last eight months alone, articles about the shortage have been published by Seven Days ,  VTDigger , KidsVT , Vermont Business Magazine , and U.S. News and World Report . And it's not just Vermont: Slate recently published a piece on "America's Child Care Deserts." So clearly there's a big problem here, and I'm sure that many families on our waitlist would agree. They need care and education for their children in order to successfully re-join the workforce, and at the moment the spots just are not there. So what's going on with early childhood education? Why can't we meet the demand for our services? Much of the answer lies in resources: as a field our value to children, families and society has not always been as clearly understood as it is today, and early childhood education programs have been historically under-funded and under-resourced in our c...

Ticks, Potty Training, and Happy Mother's Day!

News and Reminders We are moving our Parent Potluck to May 25th, it was originally scheduled for May 18th. There will be a Parent Collaboration Committee Meeting immediately following the potluck. We will be closed on May 29th for Memorial Day. If you are missing any winter gear please let us know. We are currently going through everything and storing it for next year. We have put together a lost and found in the front entryway, look for the sign. Potty Training Book Recommendation The title of this book might put you off but the advice inside is fantastic. The author, Jamie Clowacki, does a great job of being very clear and concise. It simplifies the process and gives you a sense that as long as you are in control and have a plan, teaching your child how to use the toilet is something you and your child can handle. If you have a child between 1.5 - 2.5 years who is not yet potty trained definitely consider reading this book. Ticks I'm sure you have all heard...
