Snow, Glorious Snow….

There is something to be said about the wonder of experiencing the first real snowfall of the season while surrounded by young children. In brief, it's just plain magic. While last Friday the students saw the first glimpses of winter, this week the weather became all the more real, with big fluffy snowflakes, snow beneath our boots, and of course, an icicle taste test. 

General Announcements:
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and as a reminder, we will be closed on Thursday November 27th and Friday the 28th. We hope you enjoy the holiday!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the teachers of MVS will have a volunteer day together where they will prepare pies to donate to the Lamoille Community Food Share. There's two ways that you can get involved, and we sure would LOVE your help! 1). Make a pie at home and bring it to school. Label it with all the ingredients and baking instructions, and we'll bring it along on behalf of MVS. 2). Make a donation of pie supplies! Check out Sarah's office door for our list of ingredients and sign up. And hey, if you forget to sign up, just think pie and send some ingredients along. All pies and donations should be in by  the afternoon of Friday the 21st. Thanks for pitching in.

And one more opportunity to give is located in our front hallway. The Lamoille Community Food Share is in need of the following items:

Peanut Butter
Tuna Fish
Canned Veggies
Low Sodium Soups
Cereal
Canned Chicken
Raisins
Applesauce
Pasta
Pasta Sauce
Personal Items/Toiletries
Canned Fruit
Pork and Beans
Coffee
Pet Food

Drop items in the basket, and we'll get them where they need going. 

Classroom Happenings
Infant I: Lots of children are doing new things; including crawling, standing and walking. The room has become a more active one, and that means the children are starting to engage with one another more and more. This has been especially the case as some of the older children have begun taking more interest in the younger ones; making the younger children smile or laugh has been pretty entertaining this week. Peek-a-boo is still a game of choice, and on Thursday the class did some painting, which was a big hit. 

Infant II: The next generation of talk show hosts? Maybe. The children in the Infant II room are talking. Talking you say? Indeed! Through signs. While many of the children have been using signs successfully, and constructing longer "sentences," this week they began using signs amongst themselves, without prompting from their teachers. This is some real growth. Next week, Kari and Carly will be teaching the children the first initial of each of their names. 

Toddler I: The snow made outdoor time all the more fascinating towards the week's end. Not only did the children enjoy tasting the snow, but loved watching the snowflakes fall right in front of their eyes. The class as a whole continues to be very interested in helping with tasks around the classroom, such as cleaning or putting cots away. Another observation Hannah and Melissa have made is that the children are starting to play WITH each other more as opposed to what's called "parallel play."

Toddler II: Another big Friday walk this week, in the snow no less. The children enjoyed sliding down a snowy hill on their bottoms…and okay, maybe eating some snow too. (Seeing a trend here??) When the class returned back from their walk, they were shocked to see a rogue sneaker in the parking lot. The class was very interested in this sneaker and came up with all kinds of creative ideas as to how it got there. The sneaker just so happened to be their teacher's missing sneaker. Sounds like this story could be the next big bestseller in children's literature. This week the class also welcomed a new student.

Pre-K: The Pre-K class has come to love the freedom that being just a little older provides. Exploring the wooded paths all around the school is one of their favorite activities. Beaver trees, the stream, the adventures are seemingly endless.The class has also been working on the topic of feelings and being kind with words. The group has been reading books such as Grumpy Bird and How do Dinosaurs say, 'I'm Mad' to foster discussion about feelings, what causes them and how to handle them.

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. The Provider Side

Right now in Vermont there is a critical under-supply of early childhood education programs. In the last eight months alone, articles about the shortage have been published by Seven Days ,  VTDigger , KidsVT , Vermont Business Magazine , and U.S. News and World Report . And it's not just Vermont: Slate recently published a piece on "America's Child Care Deserts." So clearly there's a big problem here, and I'm sure that many families on our waitlist would agree. They need care and education for their children in order to successfully re-join the workforce, and at the moment the spots just are not there. So what's going on with early childhood education? Why can't we meet the demand for our services? Much of the answer lies in resources: as a field our value to children, families and society has not always been as clearly understood as it is today, and early childhood education programs have been historically under-funded and under-resourced in our c
