Welcome to our Newsletter!

So we begin with the very first edition of the Mountain Village School Newsletter. Our hope is to bring you a weekly wrap up of the happenings in each of the classrooms, and give a better understanding of the all that goes on during your child's day. Additionally, this is a great way for teachers to have another space for announcements and reminders.

We will strive for this newsletter to take a weekly format, with the link to this blog arriving in your email inbox each Friday or Saturday.

Let's get started...

Halloween Parade a Graveyard Smash
Our Halloween parade was an outstanding success. Thank you to all of the parents and families who came out to march along with us, or visit on the parade route. This was our farthest parade to date, as all the children made it the whole way down Depot Street. Talk about community!

General Announcements
Please remember that we are closed in observance of Veteran's Day this Tuesday, November 11th. Thank you.

Chilly weather = More clothes. If you have not yet done so, please remember to send along proper attire for outside play including coats, insulated bottoms, boots, hats and mittens. If you have multiple pairs of mittens or socks, these are helpful as these items often get wet in the morning and can make afternoon outside time unpleasant.

Upstairs Parents: Thanks to the time change, we're running out of daylight! Towards the end of the day, if your children are not on the back playground, you can find them in the Toddler I room.

Classroom Happenings
Infant I: This week the children have been really into playing peek-a-boo, which has resulted in a lot of giggles from our youngest crew. Teachers have also observed a heightened interest in books over the past several days as well. Several children are literally "making strides" as they learn to navigate around furniture and other obstacles.

Infant II: Sarah recently added some new tunes to our classroom iPods, and the Infant II room has been enjoying the British invasion. The Beatles have been a real hit. "Can't Buy Me Love" turned bouncing babies into babies who were just plain busting a move. Another trend this week has been in the area of communication. The children have been using signs to construct multiple word sentences. For example, "eat more please."

Toddler I: On Monday, the toddlers finished their pumpkin, complete with every student's handprint. If you haven't seen it, it's right outside their special secret entrance. The name of the game this week has been independence. The kids have been working hard to get dressed in winter clothing -especially mittens- on their own.

Toddler II: Intrepid explorers…on both Thursday and Friday, the children had BIG walks on new paths. They enjoyed the nearby woods and rolling down some monster hills. Beth and Holli also report that the students have really been excited to share at circle time, and they will continue to allow lots of time for the kids to share to their heart's content.

Pre-K: Story time at the Stowe Free Library continues to fascinate, as has the change in the weather, including lots of talk of snow on Friday. The marble tracks provided the opportunity for the children to work on patterns, as they worked hard to figure out the patterns required for the marble to travel from the top to the bottom of the track. This week the Pre-K class also welcomed a new student!

See you Next Time
Thanks for reading; we'll see you with another exciting edition next week.

And they're off...

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. I want to thank all of those children for being a part of our school and our community. News and Reminders Mark your calendars: The PCC is planning a playdate with fire safety information for the morning of Saturday, September 15. More details coming soon. Kitchen Update This week the children tried carrot "noodles" which were happily slurped up in all class

The Provider Side

Right now in Vermont there is a critical under-supply of early childhood education programs. In the last eight months alone, articles about the shortage have been published by Seven Days ,  VTDigger , KidsVT , Vermont Business Magazine , and U.S. News and World Report . And it's not just Vermont: Slate recently published a piece on "America's Child Care Deserts." So clearly there's a big problem here, and I'm sure that many families on our waitlist would agree. They need care and education for their children in order to successfully re-join the workforce, and at the moment the spots just are not there. So what's going on with early childhood education? Why can't we meet the demand for our services? Much of the answer lies in resources: as a field our value to children, families and society has not always been as clearly understood as it is today, and early childhood education programs have been historically under-funded and under-resourced in our c
