Come One Come All: Fundraiser November 7th

Thanks to parents and families for attending Thursday's potluck. We look forward to another in the coming months!

MVS Fundraiser: November 7th with Chad Hollister!
Shake off the impending stick season and invite your family, friends, heck, anyone to come out November 7th and support Mountain Village School. From 2-5 pm enjoy the music of Chad Hollister and good company. We'll have plenty of eats, libations, a silent auction of prized items from businesses in our community, and...gasp! MVS merchandise. Please spread the word, the more the merrier.

Additionally, if you are able to help us prepare for or "staff" this event, we would love to hear from you!

Halloween
Our annual Halloween parade will be this Friday at 10 am. Costumes are welcome, but not required! If your child will be wearing a costume, please send it along on Friday; we will get dressed here at school.

Classroom Happenings
*Note: With cooler temps here, all teachers have requested that parents and families take stock of their winter gear and send in warm, layered clothing, hats/mittens, and warm winter footwear (rain boots are great for rain, but often are not warm enough for other conditions). Many thanks!

Infant I: This week the babies worked with paint. The teachers taped paper bags to the floor and placed drops of paint along the bags. In this open-ended exploration the children used their bodies and a variety of textured balls to manipulate the paint in whatever way they wanted. This was not only an artistic experience, but a sensory one as well. Additionally the babies have been interested in emptying out bins and containers, using the pull toys with pulling motions and stacking and knocking blocks over.

Infant II: Monday morning snow had the children just plain giddy. The class got outdoors plenty early to enjoy every last moment of the early snow before it melted away. The joy of snow was evident as they scooped, filled containers and grabbed at tiny snowballs. We continue to get visits from two chipmunks on the front playground, and we seem to study their every move. The class as a whole is still focusing on appropriate social behaviors like being gentle, shaking hands, and using teeth for chewing and smiling. There is a tremendous amount of learning in this area and we are proud of their progress!

Toddler I: In art explorations this week, the children experimented with splatter type painting and making art through messy variations. They also worked with cotton swabs to paint and practice fine motor skills. A recent area of interest has been counting past 10 to 20. The kids really enjoy saying the numbers with "teen" in them, 16, 17, 18...they seem to enunciate every last syllable. We're working hard to "name the problem" and be specific when telling classmates something. We are trying to get away from the simple "NO!" when frustrated to a specific phrase such as, "Please don't take my cup, I"m using that." We are also thinking about manners and have observed the children using "excuse me" to gain our attention or in other interactions with classmates.

Toddler II: We have continued our discussion regarding manners and being polite. We have been practicing chewing with our mouths closed, not talking with our mouths full, and having polite discussions about what we are eating. The children have been doing wonderfully! Lots of different types of painting this week with some new colors, small and large strokes and making circles and shapes. We took a walk on Thursday up the BIG hill to the chair. We observed the leaves falling off the tree and picked out maple trees and examined the leaves. Our light table was filled with circles: corks, spools, wooden rings, and tubes. The children created towers, ramps, and examined how different ones could fit together. Our yoga practice has really come along. Ask your children to show you "boat" pose, it's impressive!

Pre-K: We rearranged the room and hallway a bit and are working to maintain the organization with the children as old favorites find new homes. We have had a lot of conversations this week about personal accountability. In short, we are thinking about how to be focused first and foremost on what is it WE ourselves are doing. Am I being kind and gentle to everyone and everything? Our outdoor adventures continue as the weather changes and we are experiencing those changes first hand. In our trip to the library it was time for the letter "G." And, The Key to the Cupboard starring a one Miss Alice Snavely has become a well loved book as we head into this spooky time of Halloween! Lots of dramatic play unfolding (ask how Alice unfolds to get that pun!) around this story.

As Seen at MVS
We may be a little off our photo game this week, BUT can guarantee double photos for next week! Until then, please accept this substitute. Tibbet and Huckle, our two beloved MVS bunnies.

Thanks for Reading

And they're off...

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. I want to thank all of those children for being a part of our school and our community. News and Reminders Mark your calendars: The PCC is planning a playdate with fire safety information for the morning of Saturday, September 15. More details coming soon. Kitchen Update This week the children tried carrot "noodles" which were happily slurped up in all class

The Provider Side

Right now in Vermont there is a critical under-supply of early childhood education programs. In the last eight months alone, articles about the shortage have been published by Seven Days ,  VTDigger , KidsVT , Vermont Business Magazine , and U.S. News and World Report . And it's not just Vermont: Slate recently published a piece on "America's Child Care Deserts." So clearly there's a big problem here, and I'm sure that many families on our waitlist would agree. They need care and education for their children in order to successfully re-join the workforce, and at the moment the spots just are not there. So what's going on with early childhood education? Why can't we meet the demand for our services? Much of the answer lies in resources: as a field our value to children, families and society has not always been as clearly understood as it is today, and early childhood education programs have been historically under-funded and under-resourced in our c
