January Happenings

Closed for MLK Day
A reminder that we are closed this Monday the 18th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday when we reopen. 

Classroom Happenings
Infant I: All of the children are adding new challenges to their day. What does that look like? For instance, one of the babies who just started to walk, is now trying to carry objects while walking. Another child who has been holding toys is now starting to shake and manipulate them. Social interactions are still flourishing with babies mimicking each other, waving, clapping, and saying "hi" and "bye." Additionally some of the older children are using sign language to communicate with teachers at mealtimes. Starting on Monday we will transition from using the paper daily sheets to a white board; it will contain all of the same info regarding your child's day. And, last but not least, we welcomed a new student this week!

Infant II: We had another great week in Infant II. Despite the cold, we have really enjoyed outside play, and have taken in lots of sun. Visits from the bigger kids are great fun, they sure are strong; we've enjoyed many rides around the playground in the sleds. We've adjusted our schedule to stay outdoors a little longer, the results of which have been good lunchtime appetites and restful naps. Always great to wake up happy and refreshed! We are still working very hard at putting on our snowsuits and all of our outdoor layers.

Toddler I: It seems like we are all about the potty these days! From talking about the potty, to giving it a try, or wearing underwear, we are all making our own progress. In conjunction with the potty we've been focusing on hand washing quite a bit and talking about how it helps keep our bodies healthy, especially this time of year. New group snack has been a great part of our day. The kids really like all having the same snack and sharing in this new tradition. We've had lots of fun outside, and seem to enjoy the slippery surfaces, mainly to pretend we are ice skating. Towards the end of the week we focused on a few messy art projects indoors as well as washing the classroom babies in the sensory table.

Toddler II: One of our students welcomed a new sister, and he has been teaching us all about how to be gentle with a baby. We spent a lot of morning outdoor time with the younger children this week and continue to work on our sled pulling muscles. In the classroom we have been working on a variety of puzzles, with some of the students seeking out more challenging options. We've had some time with our watercolor paints this week and have been using funnels, small scoops and water in the sensory table. There has been a lot of focused listening during circle time; the children listen to the stories intently and remember to be quiet so others can hear. Another highlight of circle has been spelling our names aloud. We are paying closer attention to the little details of getting dressed and undressed, specifically, hanging our coats by the loop, and asking a classmate for help if something is tricky. We also began using ceramic cups and glass bowls at snacks and lunch, a big step for us and a good way to focus on careful use of our classroom materials.

Pre-K: All about that bus. On Thursday the class voted to head out and ride the Mountain Road shuttle. We caught the bus at the top of the hill and away we went. Once we arrived at the mountain, it was to the Over Easy gondola with 6 of us in one car and 6 in the other. We looked around the Spruce side and checked out the new ice skating set up. All of our intrepid skiers and riders were excited to show us the places they go when they come up for lessons. On the return trip, we pointed out all of the places in the community we know. "That's my favorite restaurant!" "My grandma's house is on that street!" A few of us debated whether or not the current bus driver was the the same driver as last week. "He has a mustache. He had a mustache the last time." In non-bus related news, this week we read three different versions of the story The Mitten. The children have been looking at similarities and differences between the books, with some really striking observations, ask them about it!

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. The Provider Side

Right now in Vermont there is a critical under-supply of early childhood education programs. In the last eight months alone, articles about the shortage have been published by Seven Days ,  VTDigger , KidsVT , Vermont Business Magazine , and U.S. News and World Report . And it's not just Vermont: Slate recently published a piece on "America's Child Care Deserts." So clearly there's a big problem here, and I'm sure that many families on our waitlist would agree. They need care and education for their children in order to successfully re-join the workforce, and at the moment the spots just are not there. So what's going on with early childhood education? Why can't we meet the demand for our services? Much of the answer lies in resources: as a field our value to children, families and society has not always been as clearly understood as it is today, and early childhood education programs have been historically under-funded and under-resourced in our c
