Moving, Changing, Growing

Closed Tomorrow for In-Service
A reminder that we will be closed tomorrow (Monday 6/13) for an in-service day. During this time, many teachers will be working on their first-aid re-certification as well as organizing their classroom spaces and swapping/changing out classroom materials. Another group of teachers will head to Shelburne Farms for the "In Bloom Vermont" conference, which focuses on best practices in early childhood education. We will have a lot to report next week so stay tuned. Thank you for your continued support of these vital in-service days, they allow for ongoing professional development, learning, and time to further improve our school's program.

Friday: Celebrating our Pre-K Students
On Friday (6/17) will have an early closure at 4:30 pm to prepare for the graduation ceremony for our Pre-K students who are moving on to kindergarten. You and your children are welcome to join us for this event which will start around 5. We hope to see you there to give these kids a great send off.

Classroom Happenings
Infant I: We have had a lot of painting projects this week. On Tuesday we worked with cool colors to paint cardboard with our hands and feet. We also used tools to paint such as brushes and tissue paper to leave different textures behind. The following day we moved on to warmer colors to create a congratulatory gift for our Pre-K pals. This sparked lots of balancing challenges when standing and walking through the paint. Other than our artistic pursuits, we have been really into climbing. We have a lot of calculated risk happening among the babies as they tackle furniture and outside structures.

Infant II: This week we really enjoyed experiencing a number of different seasons while playing outdoors. The rain is a welcome gift for us, as it creates a dynamic sensory experience. We love to find all of the places the rain water collects and like to collect it ourselves! We were also very curious about all of the work trucks coming and going and we were interested in the sounds heard from the new classroom next door.

Both of the classes also searched for worms as the wet weather brought them to our attention. We handled them gently and not-so-gently and observed them very carefully.

Toddler I: We completed construction of the large butterfly from the sticks we collected. We added tissue paper and bound it together with clear Contact paper for a "stained glass" look. It's now hanging in the window near cozy corner. We continue to bring more complex books into the classroom that revolve around the children's interests. We kept with our airplane theme again this week and now have more animal books as well. Additionally, we have been talking more about occupations. In our conversations we've been sharing what our parents do for work. MC: "My mom works at school to help kids talk." MT: "My mom does that too!!!" MM: "Mommy works on planes, daddy paints art."
We have been talking a lot about the construction going on downstairs, and we've even been able to take a few sneak peeks through the receiving doors too. "See those boards being moved from the floor to the ceiling? That's going to be a wall." We are working on updating our family collage, so please send in a photo of your family, thanks!

Preschool: Guess the tool! It's everyone's favorite party game. Well, we too have been interested in all the noises going on beneath us as the new classroom is prepared. We have been trying hard to listen and distinguish the sounds of one tool from another. We've also been making our own noises too and focusing on the rhythm and percussive elements of drumming. We've done this with new songs on our rhythm sticks (indoors) and through drum circles (outdoors).

We worked together to add a new playground feature; we hauled the yellow slide to the hill and dug into into the ground. It was exhausting work that led to a very tuckered and happy group of children. As a class we also spent time on using the slide safely and taking turns.

Sadly, we said so long to one of our classmates on Wednesday; we will miss him and wish him all good things as he heads to a new school in his hometown.

Pre-K: It's been a bit of a topsy turvy week, as to be expected in a time of transition. The students have been missing Holli, but also getting to know Megan and growing accustomed to having her in the classroom more and more. The room is a full one, and we are learning how to cooperate and negotiate with one another around such a big group. We have been splitting up a little more which is new for us. Over the next few weeks there will be more transitions for us to navigate. The children are certainly processing ALF's departure and SM's time away as well. We are busy planning for the upcoming graduation ceremony on Friday and looking forward to the celebration.

And they're off...

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. I want to thank all of those children for being a part of our school and our community. News and Reminders Mark your calendars: The PCC is planning a playdate with fire safety information for the morning of Saturday, September 15. More details coming soon. Kitchen Update This week the children tried carrot "noodles" which were happily slurped up in all class

The Social Skills of Meal Times

I recently spent time with the pre-k class during lunch when we were eating vegetable soup, grilled cheese, veggies, and tea. There were many requests to "Please pass the green beans" and "I would like more soup after you're done." I also heard children saying, "There are two sandwiches left, how about I have one and you have the other?" Of course, there were moments of sadness when someone took the prized tomato but with a little support and discussion we were able to handle it, find a solution, and move on. There were also moments of encouragement for children to try new things. The support from the other children was impressive. At a recent parent meeting, we discussed the importance of teaching social skills. For children to be able to navigate a busy table full of people, food, and some ridiculous joke telling, is quite a skill. These skills will follow them to kindergarten, when you take your family out to dinner to a busy restaurant, or at
