Save the Date: Stowe Lantern Parade Friday December 2nd, 5pm.
Well, you know we love a good parade, and here's another one we're going to bring some MVS style and spirit to. The town will be hosting a lantern parade December 2nd, and we'd like to encourage the whole school community to come out for this event. Consider it a Solstice Stroll dress rehearsal. We're already brainstorming lantern ideas, so save the date!

Classroom Happenings
Infant I: We have lots of explorers up and about and walking around the room. This has added an exciting dynamic to the space. We have an increased focus on independence and self-help skills, specifically in the areas of eating, sleeping and self soothing. This also requires a differentiated approach to our care that really supports each child and their needs as they change and shift.

Infant II: All of the children have shown an interest in playing with different varieties of blocks. Many of them are stacking at least one or two blocks onto another. They have also started to experiment with the larger blocks, stacking them high and saying "tower" as they build and work together. This play often occurs in front of the large mirror in our classroom. We have been making connections with our toy animals and the book, Who Lives in the Wild? We are asking the children other questions along these lines: "Who lives on the farm? Who lives in your house? The older children are showing increased improvement in their skills of getting dressed independently. Many are putting boots on themselves and starting to put coats on without help. Several children have even mastered the "flip trick" for their coats!

Toddler Room: We enjoyed several days of great weather and the children are hard at work on their coat zippers and putting in their boots independently. We have also been practicing putting on our coats using a technique called "flip coat." The children put their coats in front of them upside down, put their arms through the arm holes and then flip their coats over their heads to complete the task. They are very proud when successful! We are also working on using respectful manners at the table and in the classroom. We are encouraging using a kind and accepting tone when speaking to one another. The children are showing wonderful examples of compassion and empathy with each other and this is great to see.

Preschool I: This week we went on a bit on a tent building spree. Like Mr. McGee. Ask your children about him...he's very silly. We started the week with a small backpacking tent that HS's family let us borrow. On Monday, we put it together with incredible teamwork and persistence. Our second attempt was, surprisingly, harder, and we decided instead to take the footprint and rainfly and drape them over objects to make different tents. We also used some pop up forts as tents for our camping adventures. We will likely move on from camping next week to explore another interest many of the children seem to be quite taken with: hockey. Our trips to the arena keep us very excited about this topic. A popular book this week that correlated to the "Super Moon" was called Kitten's First Full Moon. The children really enjoyed contributing to the telling of the story by saying some of the lines like "poor kitten, lucky kitten, and the milk was waiting just for her." We've observed the children doing something we might call pseudo swearing. We're hearing a lot of "darn it" and "what the heck." We're not allowing this kind of language in the classroom, and are supporting the children in choosing richer and clearer words to express themselves. We'd love your help in nipping this in the bud if you are hearing it yourselves. Thanks!

Preschool II: We've been talking about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and how we will be spending our time, what we will be eating, and the people we will see. On another seasonal theme, we have begun thinking about the Stowe lantern parade and our own Solstice Stroll. We have collected a few items for our lanterns including sticks and large pieces of bark. We started making large pieces to assemble the lanterns which are made of tissue paper, paint, and of course, sparkles. We have also been washing rocks in the sensory table with scrubber brushes and textured sponges. A word of the week has been "burrow." We read about Fairy penguins that burrow and also found the word in the book, The Mitten. We observed our bunnies, Huckle and Tibbet burrowing underground as well. Our morning yoga practice has become very focused, with our balance work being quite advanced. Ask your children to share some poses with you.

Pre-K: We are continuing to evolve our dramatic play PreK Medical center. (We would like to add a scale for measuring our weight if anyone has one we could have or borrow. We'd also love to see some real X-rays). Children are beginning to learn the correct names for medical tools and the parts of the body they are used to examine or measure. We have begun talking about our bones and how they connect into our skeletons. Today we estimated and then learned how many bones are in our bodies - wow! Kate has been on vacation this week so we've been introducing Jacob to all our favorite play spaces. Our faster group loves having him on our walks because he likes to run, run, run!! The children are all excited about Thanksgiving and sharing their plans for visiting family and friends.

And they're off...

I know Graduation officially happened in June but Friday marked a special day. It was the last day for several of our children that will be heading to kindergarten on Monday. These children have been an important part of the community of Mountain Village School for many years. They have helped to shape and mold our school into what it is today. Their interests, ideas, movements, interactions, conversations, and presence has had a big impact on what we have done with our time, where we have gone, what we have chosen to build and create. I want to thank all of those children for being a part of our school and our community.
